The Perfect Gift for Golfers - Golf Ball Carvings

Are you getting tired of the same old exploding golf balls, club covers and let’s not forget the always original personalized golf tees? Maybe it’s time to get something unique, something fresh, how about a one of a kind, hand made golf ball carving like you have never seen before.

The History of my Golf Ball Carvings:
I have been carving intricate scenes into the inside of real TopFlite golf balls for about 4 years now and people are still amazed at the amount of detail I am able to include. My work has been featured in King 5 News in Seattle, Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum and several National Talk Radio shows. You will also have the ability to see my work in an upcoming issue of Golf Magazine.

I kind of began carving golf balls by accident. I was originally a wood carver and out of boredom one day decided to cut open a golf ball to remove the rubber bands. Well to my surprise there were no rubber bands, they are now made with a rubber like, composite core that helps increase distance on your golf swing. The artist inside of me instantly decided to try and create something from it and away I went. Armed with carving chisels in hand, I went to work and yes, my first few carvings came out pretty bad, but over time, I got better and now they are what you see today.

How The Golf Ball Carvings are Created:
Each golf ball undergoes hours of carving, detailing, painting and polishing before it becomes available to the public. I start by drilling a small hole (about the size of a quarter) through the outer shell of a TopFlite golf ball. This hole allows me access to the composite core found inside. Once inside I begin the long process of carving the foundation for each scene, this is done with miniature wood carving chisels that can be picked up at most craft suppliers.

Once the bulk of the scene has been carved, I begin using an assortment of dental tools to sculpt the fine details found inside each golf ball. These details often include trees, rocks, water scenes and yes even ships and cars. This is usually the longest and most painstaking part of the entire carving process.

Now the golf ball goes to paint. Each scene is painted in its full glorious detail once the carving is complete. I always use acrylic craft paints and the paint is applied with artists’ detail brushes, with the smallest of details being painted using toothpicks, due to their very fine points.

  1. Wow, you are very creative. I don’t know how you thought of that, but you deserve credit where credit is due. I live in Commerce Township and sell homes in the commerce township area. We have a lot of golf courses there, and I’m sure these would sell very well at a pro-shop.

  2. Thank you so much Mark for the kind compliments. I actually did a news story on location at a pro-shop here in the Seattle area and the feedback from the hardcore golfers was incredible, they absolutely loved them.

I have given serious thought to marketing these in pro-shops, but as of yet just haven’t gotten around to it I guess. One of these days I will. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I guess it’s another way to personalize your balls.
